Sub Genre Codes and Conventions

Front Cover:

  • Masthead- top of the page 
  • Bright and bold colour pallet 
  • Price and bar code placed at the bottom right hand side of the page along with the issue and date
  • Minimal cover lines, which vary in size and colour depending on the main image
  • One main image featuring a protagonist
  • Mise-en- scene will be new with current styles and colours
  • Simple and short cover lines
  • Usually media close up- close up shot compositions are used.


Double Page Spread:

  • One main image with the protagonist photographed on either side of the page, therefore not being effected by the crease.  
  • Image will be posed in a photo shoot, relating to the main headline
  • Headline on the left side of the page
  • Subheading follows on from the headline, being placed just underneath it
  • Colour palette based on the image
  • Front size of the article if small 10ppt
  • Font are usually a range of sanserif and serif. 
  • Typically long shots are used for the main image


Contents Page:
  • 3-4 images, varying in size. One relating to the front cover story or double page spread article.
  • Tells the reader where to find particular articles including age numbers
  • Simple colour palette
  • White background
  • Font colour is black or white in order to keep it simple  
  • A range of shot compositions are used of varying artists, or whatever's relevant to the content of the magazine
  • A range of fonts and sizes are used
  • A top of the charts column
  • The word 'Contents'
